FEARS GROW THAT ONCOLOGY SERVICES TO LEAVE LETTERKENNY HOSPITAL – TD

Donegal Deputy Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has tonight made representations to the Manager of Letterkenny General Hospital Sean Murphy seeking clarification on concerns that LGH may soon have to refer patients requiring the services of the oncology department to other hospitals.

“I have also asked Sean Murphy if he is satisfied that Letterkenny General Hospital has the requisite numbers of medical registrars, NCHDs and consultants across the various departments to provide the required service to the people of Donegal at this moment and moving forward,” Deputy Mac Lochlainn told Donegal Daily.

He said his queries follow recent developments at the hospital including the flood and patients being diverted to Sligo due to a lack of staff.

The hospital has limped from crisis to crisis in recent weeks; with insiders telling us there aren’t enough frontline staff to cope.

The Sinn Fein TD released the contents of his emailed letter sent to Sean Murphy tonight.

It reads:

Dear Sean,

I am seeking clarification on the provision of oncology services at Letterkenny General Hospital. Concerns have been conveyed to me that LGH may soon have to refer patients requiring the services of the oncology department to other hospitals.

Can you confirm that these concerns are unwarranted and that there are no such plans?

Further can you confirm that you are satisfied that LGH has the requisite numbers of medical registrars, NCHDs and consultants across the various departments to provide the required service to the people of Donegal at this moment and moving forward. Further, are you satisfied that the numbers permit LGH to comply with the European Working Time Directive of an average working week of 48 hours over a period of time?

Thank you,

Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD
