GOLF NEWS: SHAUN MEEHAN SHOOTS STUNNING 72 TO WIN MEN’S COMPETITION AT MURVAGH

Men’s Competitions

Sat / Sun 30th 31st August – Sponsored by Begley’s Pharmacy.

Shaun Meehan shot an excellent 72 to win the Begley’s sponsored Singles stroke that was played over Saturday & Sunday. GOLF LOGO

Des Noble was second with 73 while Neil Johnston in third continues to show great form despite losing a number of shots off his handicap recently.

Mark Butler took 4th on a break of tie from the daily winners Gerry Forde and Paul Murphy. John Meehan had the best gross.

Past Captains

The Past Captains Competition is on the afternoon of Sunday the 14th of September. Tee reserved from 2pm. A draw for playing partners will take place prior to play.

 

 

Thursday Specials

Once again we had an excellent turnout of 45 players on an evening that was less than ideal for Golf and it was no surprise that prizes were all picked up by those who played in the afternoon before the heavy rain started.

This week’s winner was Tony Forde with an excellent score of 30pts, Joe Craig claimed 2nd place with 32pts, Eugene McRoe was 3rd with 28pts and Charlie McGinty had the best of the 27’s to finish 4th on a break of tie. Aidy Gallagher won the prize for the 1st 9 with 19pts on a break of tie and Raymond Nolan was the best of the past players with 30pts.

This Thursday will be our last 15 Hole competition of 2014 and the last chance for someone to overtake long-time leader Frank O’Donnell(256pts) who is just holding off Martin Travers(255pts) by a single point after this week penultimate competition, Conor McNulty(251pts) is the next best. Best of luck to All.

Our Annual Mixed Greensomes will take place on the 20th September, it will be shotgun start at 3PM followed by meal, social evening and presentation for Phoenix Cup and Player of the Year. Draw for Partners and Tee’s will be made on the 11th September.

This Year’s weekend away will be held on the 11th\12th October at Slieve Russell Golf Club. Sheet is on the notice board please add your name if you are interested in travelling, the first 30 players with their name on the sheet and the €50 deposit paid will travel.

 

 

Trolley Shed Clean up.

A tidy up of the Trolley shed is being undertaken and all members who have a trolley in the shed are asked to contact Grainne to identify their trolley.

 

 

Greens Information Evening -Wednesday 10th September @ 6pm.

An Information Evening on all the aspects of Greens maintenance will take place on the 10th September. Agronomist Eddie Connaughton will be in attendance and the evening will Commence at 6.0pm at the Chipping Green. The evening will involve a demonstration of the various Machines used to maintain the greens with explanations of the various maintenance practices. The evening will finish with a short Q&A session.

 

 

Ladies’ Competitions

23rd August – Lady Captain’s Outing to Ballybofey/Stranorlar Golf Club

Sponsors: Cara Pharmacy & David Robinson, Bundoran

36 ladies travelled to Ballybofey/Stranorlar for the Lady Captain’s outing and were greeted by Lady Captain Darragh McGowan and treated to scones and homemade goodies before they headed to the golf course.

Rena Brogan, one of our most promising golfers, with 36pts, won by 6 pts from runner up Strabane based Betty Kelly. Margaret Trimble, who features regularly among the prizewinners, was 3rd with 29pts.

That evening, the ladies retired to the Abbey Hotel for a welcome dinner and presentation of prizes.

Phil Mundy (32) was the winner of this 9 hole competition with 15pts. She used a 5 wood, 8 iron and a putter for the winning score.

 

29th August -18holes Stableford – Sweep

Because of the sanding and seeding of the greens, the Ladies competition was held on Thursday.

Dorothy Woods was the winner with 36pts. Gillian O’Callaghan took 2nd place with 34pts. In 3rd place Bernie Finn had 33pts

7th & 9th September – Sponsor Harveys Point & the Medal Trophy. Those who were first in 18 hole stroke competitions during the year will be eligible to win the Medal Trophy.

10th September – Past Lady Captains’ competition (1pm to 2 pm) with dinner at 6 pm in the Clubhouse. Draw on Saturday 6th September.

 

Club News

Social Mixed on the 22nd August was won by Brian Neilan, Gerard Gallagher and Michael McGarvey. Obviously not a big turn out of ladies that evening.

29th August – Winners were Margaret Buckley, Peter Sweeney and Michael McGarvey

These mixed continue for the next few Fridays with running draw next Friday 5th September from 5pm to 5.30pm.
