Garda killer Martin McDermott is to get early release from jail.

The thug from Raphoe, who mowed down Garda Gary McLoughlin in Burt in 2009, is due for early release next June.

This comes despite the fact that he escaped from jail and went on the run before being recaptured in Derry.

McDermott is entitled to 25% remission for good behaviour.

It is understood he only received an extra 14 days on top of his sentence for absconding from Loughan House.

McDermott was jailed for a total of seven years for the manslaughter of brave Garda McLoughlin in 2011.

He was twice over the legal drink-driving limit when he ploughed into a car containing Garda McLoughlin and a colleague following a separate Garda pursuit.
