Gaeil Fhánada 3:11 v Realt na Mara, Bundoran 0:14
Bundoran made the long trek to Portsalon to take on Fanad Gaels last Saturday evening and left empty handed. Both Seami Friel’s contributed handsomely to Fanad’s final tally, amassing 3-7 between them in what was an impressive victory for the hosts. Bundoran already have a promotion playoff wrapped up while Fanad are looking to consolidate a top 4 finish. Fanad started brightly, Marty McAteer scoring the first point of the game after being set up by Jonny Friel. Seami Nanny Friel extended the lead from a placed ball after he was fouled by James Keaney. Bundoran struck back, Tommy Hourihane and the pacy Christy Keaney htiing the target. Seami Coshia Friel opened his account from the tightest of angles, and Patrick McConigley swung over a beauty with his left foot after a crossfield pass from Michael Sweeney. Shane McGowan and Michael McEniff for Bundoran were driving at Fanad throughout the day, but Cathal Martin, in the sweeper role, cut out a lot of threatening ball. Keaney and Hourihane hit the target again to tie up the scores for the second time, only for Fanad to respond with two Seami Nanny Friel scores, one a free and the other a fisted effort after a lung bursting run. A moment of controversy followed, a long ball by McConigley was gathered by Coshia Friel, who seemed to be fouled as he was through on goal, but Martin Coll waved play on. Fanad showed great character however, and in what was an almost identical move as the previous one, they struck goal. Michael Sweeney fielded and launched a high ball to Coshia Friel. Friel gathered and tucked the ball away, just on the stroke of half time to give Fanad a 5 point cushion. HT: Fanad 1-6 – 0-4 Bundoran Fanad started brightest in the second half, Seami Nanny Friel hit 2 points to make it a 7 point game. Bundoran hit back however, Adam Coyne and 2 beauties from the returning Gary Clancy were the catalyst. Couple that with some fine scores from Michael McEniff and Christy Keaney(2) made it a one point game, with Bundoran well on top. Fanad, to their credit, hit back, Marty McAteer with a fine point Seami Nanny Friel with a fantastic solo effort goal to put 5 between the sides. Bundoran hit the next 3 scores, Hourihane from long range, Keaney with a free and another Coyne point from play. With the game finely balanced, Ryan McGonigle came into his own and some inspirational fielding pushed Fanad on. Seami Coshia pointed from distance to make it a 3 point game. Bundoran then broke for a goal chance only for Mark McConigley to pull off a sensational stop. This proved the turning point, Fanad broke and Coshia hit a goal, squeezing the ball under the Bundoran keeper to put 6 points in it. Mark Friel got a lovely point before David Studdard finished the scoring with a point for the Seasiders. A fine win by Fanad who consolidate their place in Division 2 with this win. Jonny Nanny Friel covered every inch of grass while Ryan McGonigle was equally impressive. The scoring prowess of the Friel’s won it in the end. Best for Bundoran were Shane McGowan and Christy Keaney.
