GOLF NEWS: BRENDAN KELLY WINS THE KILBRAE CUP AT DUNFANAGHY

written by Stephen Maguire September 10, 2014

GOLF LOGODunfanaghy Golf Club Notes:

We are certainly basking in the sunshine at the moment with tropical weather since the weekend. The course is in great condition.

We had the Kilbrae cup on Saturday last and Brendan Kelly was victorious with a score of 43 pts. Well done Brendan who is down to his lowest handicap ever. All the lessons with Seamus are paying dividends. Well done also to Cairns who came second. It is the Jazz n Blues weekend next with open 4BBB competitions each day (any Combinations). The Clubhouse is open each weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) for food. What better place to come to get away from all crowds and the music in the town over the weekend. Don’t be afraid to let your friends know.

The Club has secured two All Ireland Final Football Tickets and we are currently running a draw for these tickets. The lines are priced (one line for €5.00 and three lines for €10.00). There are sheets available in the clubhouse with twenty lines on each sheet or you can purchase lines behind the bar or in the shop.

All Sheets have to be returned to the clubhouse by Thursday the 18th of September and the draw will take place on Friday 19th September.

Please try and sell a few lines for the club if you can. You might be lucky enough to win tickets to the final.

The time slots are already filling up for the Ryder cup Weekend, so don’t miss you opportunity to be part of a great weekend of festivities at the club. There are still time slots available for the morning and afternoon of Saturday and also the three ball scramble on the Sunday. We are advertising these competitions in neighbouring golf clubs this week so make sure you get your name down quickly. A full detail of the activities at the club will be posted on our website over the coming week.

New Year’s Eve At The Clubhouse

We are pleased to announce that the very enjoyable New Year’s Eve Party held at the Clubhouse last year is again being organised. The Band, which by all accounts, “made the party” have again been booked. Food, although yet to be arranged, will be along the same lines as last year. The cost will again be €30 per person and numbers will be strictly limited to sixty people on a “first come” basis. No tickets will be issued, and bookings can only be confirmed on receipt of full payment. Mary will be in charge of all bookings and as this will sell out very quickly I would advise those interested to contact her immediately and pay by card over the phone.

As this is not priced as a fund raising exercise there will be no refund for those having booked but unable to attend.

If however, you are unable to attend please contact Mary and you will be put in touch with someone on the waiting list willing to buy your ticket.

Dunfanaghy ladies – Notes

As the summer draws to a close, there is still plenty of golf being played in Dunfanaghy. The weather has been holding up and many visitors/tourists are visiting the town and popping into the Club to organise a round of golf.

The Dunfanaghy Winter Links, organised by Betty Hennessey, takes place the first Tuesday of each month. The first of the Winter Links took place on 2 September and well done to the prize winners listed below. The next competition is on Tuesday 7th October and can be booked online or by contacting the Club.

1st Lyn McOwan (20) 38pts BOT

2nd Ann Curran (20) 38pts BOT

3rd Cheryl Chambers (19) 38pts

4th Margaret Mc Crossan (17) 37pts

Irish Mail Foursomes was played on Saturday 6th and was won by a couple of ladies who are having a very consistent season and who have been in the winner’s enclosure several times this year, namely, Margaret Roarty and Rose Gavaghan with 35pts.

Next weekend is the Jazz weekend in Dunfanaghy and there are 4BBB any combination competitions scheduled for the Saturday and Sunday. The time sheet is available online.

The Ryder Cup weekend promises to be a major event in this year’s calendar and is very kindly sponsored by Vice Captain, Von Munroe, aka Smiley Munroe. There are several posters around the Club house outlining details and information is available on the website. A full programme of golf and entertainment is planned for the weekend.

In brief, there is a singles competition on Friday, a team competition with two shot gun starts on Saturday and a 3 person scramble on Sunday. There are still a few slots available on Saturday, so round up your friends and enter a team and then retire to the Club house to watch Paul Ginley, Ryder Cup Captain, lead the European Team to victory.

Dates for your diary

4BBB any combination – 13th and 14th September

GOY competition – 20th September

Ryder Cup Weekend – 26th, 27th and 28th September

Winter Links – Tuesday 7th October

4BBB and AGM – Saturday 25th October

Juvenile notes;

The party is over for the previous members of the main juvenile section with the two recent graduates from the cadets making their mark very early and sending out a clear signal that they mean business.

Michael Dolan and Max Roarty led the way last week with Michael just edging past Max in a playoff. In the Cadet Section Andy ward was the winner.
