Donegal County Council has collected 40 tonnes of waste and helped to filled nine articulated lorries.

Throughout August the council in conjunction with WEEE Ireland organised eight free “one- off” electrical goods recycling days across the county.

These days took place over the course of three weekends in Falcarragh, Carrigart, Bunbeg, Buncrana, Lifford, Kilybegs, Bundoran and Glencolmcille.

Over 40 tonnes of all types of large and small waste electrical and electronic goods were collected for recycling, filling a total of nine articulated lorries.

WEEE standing for waste electrical and electronic equipment was set up to allow householders to bring back their old electrical or electronic items to retailers for free.

Meaning that if a retailer has given a householder 24 hours’ notice of delivery and your old item is ready for collection the retailer must collect the old item on delivery of the new one, completely free of charge.

If the item is not available for immediate collection and the householder has been given 24 hours’ notice of delivery the householder can return the item to the store or to a recycling centre. If however, the retailer has not given 24hours’ notice of delivery the householder can ask the retailer to return and take the old item back within 15 days.

Consumers purchasing goods online or from catalogues should be aware that the retailer must ensure that electrical goods can be returned free of charge on a one-for-one basis. They must also place a visible notice on their website, catalogue or advertisements indicating free take-back.

Larger electrical stores with sales that are greater than 400 sq metres must take back small electrical and electronic items (less than 25cm) free of charge without any obligation to purchase a new one.

Bring waste electrical goods back to one of Donegal’s six Recycling Centres for Free

You can bring back your waste electrical goods free of charge all year round to any one of the six recycling centres in Donegal. The recycling centres are located in Letterkenny, Laghey, Milford, Carndonagh, Dungloe and Stranorlar.

All sizes and all types of old unwanted electrical goods or electronic goods are accepted for recycling free of charge, basically anything with a plug or a battery. Check out opening hours at www.brysonrecycling.org .

For more information on the free recycling of electrical or electronic goods visit www.donegalcoco.ie or www.weeeireland.ie or contact David Friel Recycling Officer on 074 9176274 or Suzanne Bogan, Waste Awareness Officer on 074 9176276.
