COMPLAINTS about the lack of Irish-speaking Gardaí in the Donegal gaeltacht has led the force to hire new recruits who can speak the language.
This week saw the first group of Irish language recruits from the Garda Training College in Templemore.
This was due to enhanced co-operation between the office of An Coimisinéir Teanga and garda authorities.
The commissioner criticised Gardaí in 2010 about the lack of officers in Gaeltacht areas with one specific complaint in relation to the garda station in the official in Bunbeg.
It was decided that 10% of new recruits would be Irish speakers.
