GARDA GARDAI in Ballyshannon are questioning a Ukrainian man over the stabbing of a fellow national aboard a ship 300kms off the Mayo coast.

The victim, who is 26, was flown to Sligo by the Coast Guard 118 helicopter before being transferred in a critical condition to University College Hospital in Galway.

The 32-year-old suspect from Ukraine was detained when his boat, the Afric Star, docked in Killybegs earlier today.

The cargo vessel was travelling from St Petersburg to Panama when the incident happened.
