More than 3,000 young people from 33 secondary schools in Donegal and 6 schools from Derry attended the Road Safe Roadshow in the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny on this week.
The show, which is in its seventh year, is hosted by Donegal County Council in association with the Donegal Road Safety Working Group (DRSWG). The show tells the story of how a night out ends in tragedy for a 17-year old boy who has just passed his driving test.
Brian O’Donnell, Road Safety Officer with Donegal County Council said that “the success of the show can be gauged in that all Secondary Schools in County Donegal since the show was first launched have sent their Transition year, Leaving Cert Applied and fourth year students to the show”.
He added “in addition to this Youthreach Centres, ETB participants also attend as well as students from Derry”.
This year’s show was particularly poignant with the tragic loss of Kym Harley in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The deepest sympathy was conveyed by Charlie Collins on behalf of everyone involved in the show to Kym’s father Martin, mother Denise, to her sisters and brother and to her extended family and friends.
