Jimmy and Kathleen Cuddihy suffered a horrific death.
They were in their 70s.
Jimmy was a retired schoolteacher who was originally from Kilkenny but was very much local, having taught Maths at school and in later years.
Kathleen was retired nurse who worked as a paramedic.
Both were found murdered at their home shortly after 9am today. A man was arrested on the mountain road outside Carn later.
He is still being questioned by Gardai in Buncrana.
A pathologist and forensic experts remain at the home on the Buncrana Road in Carndonagh this afternoon.
“They were just the most brilliant people,” said one neighbour.
“We are struggling to come to terms with what happened to them.”
Local councillor Martin McDermott summed up the mood in the town today.
“There is a deep sense of shock and it will be some time before we all take this in,” he said.
