They were both talented Special Olympian sportsmen in their day, but McElhinney brothers Michael and Patrick also showed their fantastic musical talents on Saturday night when they got Friel’s of Raphoe rocking to win the Stars in Their Eyes contest hosted by Raphoe Town Football Club.
Michael and Patrick wowed the huge crowd with fabulous renditions of Smokie’s ‘Needles and Pins’ and then had the place going wild with delight with a wonderful rendition of ‘Galway Girl.’
The performance from the brothers was just one of many highlights on a fabulous night of entertainment that saw many of Raphoe’s well-known players take on new personalities for the evening.
Manager Stephen Conaghan and midfielder Oliver Quinn got the night’s feast of entertainment under way when they appeared to perform a superb version of Right Said Fred’s “I’m Too Sexy.”
Michael Ayton and Peter McGlynn stayed in heart-throb mode with their rendition of Westlife’s ‘What About Now,’ while there was a huge buzz of laughter and applause when club captain Paddy Gallagher appeared as Sandy from Grease alongside Stephen Laird to perform ‘Summer lovin’ the classic from the movie.
Sean Friel and Glen Gallagher were superb as Jedward while Mark and Seamus Bogle as The Proclaimers, Michael Quinn and Stephen Laird as The Monkees and Craig Kelly and Michael Curran as ‘The Blues Brothers’ all had the huge crowd screaming with joy on the night.
And there was even time for one more special act after the magnificent McElhinney Brothers and it was one that sent the atmosphere in Friel’s sky high with squealing euphoria.
Christy Bogle led the line up this time as the policeman from Village People, followed closely by Paddy Gallagher, Lee Smyth, Mark Bogle, paul Carberry and Stephen Conaghan.
The other acts from the night even joined in for the dancing as the lads gave a belting performance of YMCA to their adoring crowd.
Money raised from the brilliant night of entertainment will go towards the club’s new clubhouse development and with the acts still the talk of the town there’s even talk of this becoming an annual event now!
