One fireman was struck with a stone as they were set on by a crowd of youths at the fire at the old Model Bakery close to the Oldtown.

Gardai arrived on the scene but were then called away to another incident.

It is not understood that any arrests were made during the incident around 9pm

A source at the fire service said this was the first time he recalled ever being attacked.

“I can never remember being set upon like this. It was pretty scary. It looked as if they were waiting for the lads to arrive.

“One of the lads was hit was a stone but he brushed it off and was not injured.

“It’s terrible to think the lads were just responding to a call when these youths attacked them like this,” he said.
