ANGER AS TOWN CENTRE CAR PARK TO CLOSE

A Letterkenny town centre car park used by hundreds of people every day is to be closed next week – just weeks before Christmas.

The old ‘swimming pool’ car park on the High Road Letterkenny is being shut off as preparations begin to build a new court house.

The car park is used by the local tennis club as well as people visiting the Regional Cultural Centre.

But local businessman Peter Cutliffe said its closure just before Christmas is “complete madness”.

He told Donegal Daily: “I’m not sure who actually made this decision, but they are obviously not too concerned about the affect on town-centre business before Christmas, local workers or indeed our great facility at Letterkenny Tennis Club.

He added: “This is certainly an issue for the Chamber of Commerce & the Town-team to get vocal and at least get this closure deferred till after Christmas.

“I’m quite sure construction of the new courthouse will not start in next few weeks in any event.”

He also said there is also now an excellent opportunity for local council to negotiate with Department of Justice to allow for some extension to the adjacent boxing-club building before work commences.
