Swimmers from Loreto schools countrywide gathered in the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin on Thursday last for the annual inter Loreto Schools Swimming Gala.
With only 11 swimmers able to travel on the day and competing against some of the top swimmers in the country the Letterkenny girls gave of their best both in individual events and in the relays.
Emma Harvey, Emma Vaughan and Cara Nulty all secured gold in their individual events and many other team swimmers secured placings thus gaining points for their team.
The relay races were nail biting and were won on the last length so close were all the swimmers.
The Junior relay team of Cara Nulty, Aoibheann O’Grady, Victoria Lee and Eadaoinn Kelly won silver, the Intermediate team of Sinead O’Kane, Sarah Duffy, Chloe Tinney and Eadaoinn Kelly swam very well and were unfortunate not to qualify for the final but they gained valuable team points.
Last up were the Seniors and as winners of this event last year there were great expectations and a degree of nervousness having seen the high standard of the competitors in the indivdual events but the girls from Letterkenny did themselves proud and regained their trophy again.
The team were Emma Harvey, Ellen Doherty, Emma Vaughan and Emma Tinney.
When the total points from all events were added the girls from Letterkenny were overjoyed when they were declared as third overall school out pf seventeen Loreto schools competing.
It is now preparation time for the Ulster Secondary Schools competition will take place in Ballymena after Christmas.
