A hospital worker has said the overcrowding at Letterkenny General Hospital is the worse she has seen it in more than a decade.
The employee was speaking after another challenging night for staff and management at the facility.
Donegal Daily revealed on Sunday night how capacity was stretched to breaking point.
And yesterday the HSE issued a statement admitting that a spike in hospital admissions had seen 20 people on beds on trolleys yesterday.
The situation appeared to get worse last night.
We have learned that ALL day surgery cases and theatre lists have been CANCELLED for the week ahead.
It comes as staff were forced to turn the day service unit into a working ward while the casualty waiting area was full to capacity.
The worker said elderly people had been forced to wait on chairs for hours to be seen by overburdened frontline staff.
The employee said “It is simply unreal stuff. Elderly people are siting on chairs for hours waiting to be seen.
“The hospital simply cannot cope with the situation at present.
“The staff are doing their best but it’s bedlam,” she said.Tags:
