The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea, and relies totally on the generosity of the public and through fundraising activities.
The RNLI provide a very important service to us in Ireland, to us here in County Donegal on the coastal areas, throughout our summers and wintery weather. However, last week’s storms were well ‘flagged’ in advance, so much so, that were no serious events.
Throughout Ireland and further afield, the RNLI crews are regularly out and about braving the elements, putting their own lives in danger, all to help others!
31st January is traditionally known as SOS day throughout Ireland and the UK. A day when communities come together to support the work of the RNLI and raise funds by having an SOS day, be it Sponsored events, Sausage Sizzles, Shaves, or anything beginning with an S.
This year in County Donegal there will be a fundraising campaign to support SOS day on Sunday next 26th at 3pm , when there will be 5k walks taking place at several venues along our coasts. These walks, known as a ‘Stroll on Sunday’, will take place in Downings, Rathmullan, Letterkenny, Buncrana and Portsalon.
This will be a family fun afternoon where no experience is needed, but only a willingness to participate and support a worthy charity, as well as parting with a few Euro to help a good cause. No set fee, just a donation! Bring the children, bring the family and there will be refreshments served afterwards at all venues with all monies raised going towards the ongoing work of the RNLI.
Buncrana registration will take place at the Lifeboat Station from 2.45 pm and will stroll from the Station along the coastal path to Stragill beach and back, with tea and refreshments afterwards. Further information available from John McCarter 087 2572516.
Patricia McAteer (087 231 4332) is in charge of the Rathmullen Walk with registration (2.45pm) at the White Bar, followed by walking along the beach, coast and back again to the bar for refreshments afterwards.
The Fanad Walking Group are hosing the Portsalon Walk, with registration at The Stores and returning there for refreshments. Again registration at 2.45 pm, and information from Mary 087 622 8425.
The Letterkenny walk will once again use the Radisson Blu Hotel as their base with the Letterkenny Senior Accordian Band leading out the walkers at 3pm, followed by refreshments and entertainment afterwards. This was a very lively afternoon last year and thoroughly enjoyed by all walkers and guests alike.
The Harbour Bar in Downings will be the base for that Stroll, with registration at 2.45pm and refreshments there afterwards. Information available from Heather 087 247 7595.
We would look forward to your support at any of these walks, and hopefully the weather will be kinder than of late. If you’d like more information or would like to get involved in any of these events contact Hazel @ 086 2804555 in the meantime.
That’s a Stroll on Sunday , this weekend, the 26th January at 3 pm at a location near you around our coasts with all proceeds in aid of the RNLI. So ample opportunity to get out and enjoy the fresh air while helping the continued work of our gallant rescue service.Tags:
