Representatives of the Buncrana Against Water Charges group are seeking a meeting with Gardai amidst fears of a conflict between locals and Irish water workers.
The group have already approached local Gardai to set up a meeting as soon as possible.
It follows speculation group that Irish Water meter installers will be coming to the area in the next fortnight.
Spokesman for BAWC, James Quigley, said the forced installation of these meters and the resident’s oppostion to them has the potential to create a major conflict.
“Residents in the town will be incensed by the installation of these devices against their wishes and imposition of what we see as another unjust charge for what is an essential for life.
“The Buncrana Against Water Charges representatives will meet the Garda Superintendent to discuss ways for diffusing the situation . We will ask him to facilitate a compromise.
“We will propose that we will not stop the installation of meters in properties whose owners want them.
“However, the company must respect the wishes of owners who do not want a meter. We would rather negotiate rather than go down the confrontational route just like the precedent set by the Moneymore residents in Drogheda on 26th Jan last.”
