COMMENT: It stops now.
The bluster, the waffle, the excuses.
When breast cancer surgeon Mr Michael Sugrue says he is considering resigning because he cannot do his job properly, it’s time to sit up and take notice.
Without a second surgeon at Letterkenny General Hospital, he says he is effectively being forced out of the facility.
It comes as speculation mounts that cancer services in Donegal may be centralised to Galway.
Once again the Donegal public is being treated like a second-class citizen.
The Saolta University Health Care Group say they are meeting appointment requirements for the women of Donegal.
But the reality is that cancer services in Donegal are literally crumbling before our eyes and the centralisation of such services is NOT the answer.
That is what Mr Sugrue and his fellow surgeon Kevin Moran, who is due to resign shortly, realise.
And that is why these men, who would much rather being trying to save the lives of people than speaking out about the lack of services, are doing this.
Nothing short of a second breast cancer surgeon will alleviate the pressure on our cancer services in Donegal.
We need action, not excuses or explanations and we need it now.
