With the weather playing “will it-won’t it” games at the moment, congratulations to all those golfers who take to the fairways, probably getting any rustiness cleared of the swing before the GUI competitions begin.
At the moment, it seems to be the lower handicapped golfers who are making regular visits to the winners’ enclosure and none more so than Clifford Malone [6], following up his St. Patrick’s Day Cup win with another 1st on Wednesday 25th Open. Despite a bogey start and a few pars mixed in on the front nine, Clifford’s winning mentality kicked in following his birdie at the par five 11th which he followed up with a level par finish to 18th for an inward nine of 20pts and an overall total of a modest 37pts to win on a three-way B.O.T. from Joe Brown [15] a regular prizewinner from last season. Whilst probably rueing “blanks” at 1st & 13th, Joe recorded 20pts on back nine to relegate Ciaran Bradley [12] to third place. Gross prize was won by Captain Gerard Duffy with 30 gross points.
Saturday 26th Open at Barnhill was won by visiting golfer Seamus Mc Cauley [10] with 38pts. Having recorded 20pts on front nine, Seamus retrieved his non scoring “blank” at 14th with a finishing birdie at par five 18th to pip runner-up Aiden Friel [8] by one point. Aiden’s birdies at 5th & 7th were somewhat diminished by a double bogey at 6th but a 20pt front nine gave him great impetus on the turn only for another double bogey at par three 13th to no doubt “scuttle” the top spot.
Sunday 29th confined competition, played in bouts of sunshine intermitten with wintry showers and sleet, was won by cat 3. handicapper Gareth Devenney [18]. Playing steady handicap golf over front nine, Gareth, despite recording a double bogey and a “blank”, on back nine, retrieved his card somewhat with a birdie at 18th to finish on 38pts and top of the winners rostrum.
