Congratulations to Juvenile member Eoghan Harkin who won the Easter Tuesday Junion competition at Barnhill. Playing steady, conservative golf over 18 holes, Eoghan returned 41pts to outpace his nearest rivals by two.
With the weather holding up from last weekend’s glorious Easter, Wednesday 8th Open once again proved successful with entries and leading the field was single handicapper Kevin Kiely , whose intent on lowering his handicap to five or less this year
started with a winning score of 41pts. With birdies at 1st & 5th, Kevin took the turn with 21pts for front nine and continued his fine shotmaking on inward nine with a two over par gross 38, with bitter disappointment at recording an unusual bogey at par five 18th. Two points behind in runner-up spot was Gerard Boyce who, with three double bogey’s recorded on the card for front nine, came alive following his birdie at 11th and finished with a two over par 38 shots and 22pts on back nine for a 39pt finish. In third place was the ever present Kevin Hannigan who, despite blanks at 1st and 11th, recorded birdies at 3rd, 12th & 18th for a 19pt return on each nine and signing for a 38pt total. Best gross on the day was returned by junior member Jack Patton with 32 gross pts.
Saturday 11th Open ,played in relatively “quiet” weather, was won by cat 2 member Gerard Boyce with a modest score of 37pts. With a birdie at 2nd helping Gerard to a front nine of 20pts, his two double bogeys on back nine almost blew it for him but he held on to beat William White on a B.O.T. William also posted two “blanks” on front nine but a good inward run gave him 20pts and second place.
Sunday 12th at Barnhill saw the long awaited first “major” of the season, the members Voucher competition and, true to expectation, there was an extra large turnout of members trying to “master” the course and indeed, that was done by two of our leading golfers, Simon Stephens and junior member Jack Patton . Despite the rain showers and strong winds which were in total contrast to the previous weekend, Simon’s card read with birdies at 3rd, 8th, 10th and 18th, one under par gross 35 shots for front nine whilst his inward nine was covered in one over par 37 shots for a level par gross 72 and a points total of 41pts. Meanwhile, following on from his gross winning score on Wednesday, junior member and Fred Daly team stalwart Jack Patton showed his intention of reaching “scratch” when, with birdies at 7th and 12th, recorded a one over par 37 shots on front nine and, with the help of a glorious six iron “masters” shot for his approach at par five 18th which resulted in an eagle putt from twenty feet, Jack recorded a level par back nine for a total of 39pts. In third place was Ulster Cup team captain Charlie Coughlan who, with unfortunate double bogey’s on each nine, still managed a return of 38pts to win on B.O.T. from Michael Shiel whose great start of birdie at 1st got him into 4th place.
Congratulations to Junior member Patrick Page who won his first man’s competition at Barnhill on Easter Monday last with a very fine score of 42pts. Isn’t it great to see the hard work and commitment of the Junior convenors coming to fruition?
Congratulations to club member Jamie Foley on winning the Dunfanaghy Golf Club senior scratch cup on Saturday last. Club prizewinners also included Conor Mc Gettigan and Joe Coyle in the Intermediate.
Best of luck to the Ulster Cup team who travel to Cairndhu on Saturday for the first leg of their match, with the return match in Letterkenny on Sunday.
