Cllr Patrick McGowan has welcomed the new infill street lights erected this week at Stranamuck in Castlefin – 11 years after the project began!
Cllr McGowan had instigated a walkway from Castlefin town to Robert Emmets GAA grounds back in 2004 but the street lighting was incomplete due to a short fall in the grant at that time.
However Donegal County Council has finally made up the funding shortfall now which has at last paid for the remaining lights to be erected.
Said Cllr McGowan: “I wish to thank everyone who helped especially Senator Brian O Domhaill and Donegal Co Council Engineer Adrian McCool.
“These light will make the pathway much safer and encourage more people to get out walking and running.
“I am also delighted with the progress with works to widen the approach to Castlefin bridge this protect was started late in 2011 but was faced with design and new Dept regulations issues but never the less we kept at it.
“It has to be pointed out that no Direct Government / Dept grants have been allocated at any stage, all funding so far has been sliced off the local roads programmes in The Stranorlar Municipal area.
“Government must surely be ashamed that they have not made even a small grant available at this stage on this Regionally important cross border road.
“The next stages will need further funding and I am calling on local people to make it a election issue when they are being canvassed.
“In the meantime I will continue to push for matching funding locally via the Council.”
