Joseph Duffy produced a brave display but ultimately lost out by unanimous decision in a bloody battle with Dustin Poirier at the MGM Arena, Las Vegas.
In what was a pulsating fight – Poirier came out on top on the judges scorecards – mainly due to his ability to control the fight on the floor.
Duffy landed some devastating shots in the opener, and bust Poirier’s nose badly.
His nose was bleeding profusely for the remainder of the bout – but the experienced American began to take control in the second.
He landed a big shot of his own which almost closed Duffy’s right-eye, while the Burtonport man also had a bloody nose.
The majority of the exchanges were on the canvas with Poirier in control – he landed some big elbows to Duffy’s face – but Duffy defended himself well for the majority of the canvas.
In the third and final round Duffy almost submitted Poirier on two opponents – but the American was able to avoid both attempts.
While he just ran out of time with his final submission attempt – with commentators saying if the fight lasted another twenty seconds that Poirier could’ve been forced to tap out.
Duffy will be devastated to lose, but it’s only his third fight in the UFC and still has a bright, bright future in the sport.
He will be keen to bounce back as soon as possible and may return to the Octagon early in the summer.
