DONEGAL were left shocked this afternoon as St Mary’s produced the shock of the Dr McKenna Cup to defeat Rory Gallagher’s side at O’Donnell Park.
In what was a drab affair in truth, Donegal struggled to breakdown a well organised and resolute St Mary’s defence.
The Students regularly had fourteen men behind the ball – which made it very difficult for Donegal.
Donegal had to be patient – but with the exception of Odhran MacNiallais who kicked SIX superb points – the rest of the Donegal squad left their shooting boots at home.
Against such a well organised defence – it was critical for Donegal to convert their scoring opportunities when they arose – but unfortunately they weren’t clinical enough and were punished by the students.
It was all level at half-time – and twenty minutes into the second-half the sides were still deadlocked.
Eoin McHugh had given Donegal an early second-half lead but that was cancelled out by St Mary’s.
Odhran Mac Niallais notched Donegal back in front on two different occasions – but then a crazy five minute spell won the game for St Mary’s.
St Mary’s stunned Donegal when after a free flowing move involving the superb Patrick McBride who was introduced as a substitute was expertly dispatched by Ryan Johnson.
St Mary’s then had an opportunity of another goal – but Danny Rodgers tipped over the bar after a wonderful save.
St Mary’s added a late score to ran out winners by four points.
Rory Gallagher introduced Michael Murphy and Neil McGee at half-time – but Donegal never kicked on and were too wasteful in the final third.
Final score: Donegal 0-08 St Mary’s 2-06
