DDTV: SEE DONEGAL GIRL’S AMAZING 40 HOUR LEGO VIDEO!

A Donegal schoolgirl has completed an amazing Lego video which took her a whopping 40 hours to make.

Fourteen year old Neve Scanlan from Deele College in Raphoe has wowed her classmates and teachers with the mini-film.

The video, which can be seen on the school website, deelecollege.ie, was carried out as part of an English assignment, where she was asked to create a trailer for the film, ‘Of Mice and Men.’

The John Steinbeck classic was studied by Neve and her classmates and each student had to use their own original ideas to create a presentation. However, it was Neve’s video that caught everyone’s attention, with its originality and clever editing.

The trailer is presented through the medium of Lego characters, who act out some of the scenes from the film, while the audio is taken from the film itself.

Neve took a whopping 540 photos for the project, which took fifteen hours in total. She also spent three hours designing the sets for the video, which were made from Lego. After all of this, she then had to spend twenty-five hours editing the shots and making sure it was synced with the audio.

All of this took both great dedication and skill. Neve says that she was first shown how to do this by her dad, who works in computers and she also did video editing during her time with the Raphoe Scouts. Despite her dad’s knowledge in the area, she insists that this was a solo effort and she received no help throughout the process. She says she loves working with Lego because it is so versatile.

“When we were given the options for the project, I picked the video straight away because I have such an interest in videos and in editing. I used Lego because it’s so different and you can do so much with it. I really enjoyed doing the video and during it, you’re thinking about how film-makers would shoot scenes and the different ways of getting the message across.”

Principal, Joe Boyle was delighted with Neve’s efforts, saying that this type of work highlights the benefits of the new Junior Cert syllabus, which places an emphasis on independent learning and originality.

“The video is spectacular, I was shocked at how well it was put together and by how much effort went into the project. The new Junior Cert places a large emphasis on the acquisition of skills, outside of reading and writing and this is the perfect example. Neve has shown great creativity and originality and through the new system, she will be rewarded for this work.”

Neve says that she has plans in the future to work in the world of film making and film editing and with this type of work at her age, who would bet against it?
