Deciding what college to attend can be an overwhelming decision, from the points race to choosing the ideal course, there are a lot of factors to consider.

Graduation Day represents celebration, the final chapter in the college book, but getting there is a journey in itself. Laura, Una and Natasha’s journeys started at Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) in 2011 – hear their story.

Laura Mc Grenra from Castlefinn, knew she always wanted to be a primary school teacher and having successfully gained enough points to study primary education, she made the decision to study at home, rather than studying afar.

She added, “At 17, I knew I wasn’t ready to leave home, I was recommended the Early Childcare, Health and Education degree course at Letterkenny IT and I knew that it was the perfect choice for me, as it allowed me to live at home, work part-time, safe in the knowledge that this course would open doors into primary education for me. My favourite modules were ‘Outdoor Play’ and ‘Disability Awareness’. Both of these modules provided me with valuable experiences in areas that are topical in the field of education. I have fantastic memories of my time at LYIT, with a great group of girls. I’m now 21 years old, studying a Professional Masters of Education in Primary Education at St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra.”

Una Brennan, from Bundoran, gained advanced entry into 2nd year of the Early Childcare, Health and Education course at LYIT, after studying a HND at North West Regional College Derry. Her favourite element of the course was work placement.

Una outlined, “Meeting new people, and gaining experience in a broad range of settings stood well to me when applying for jobs after graduating. During my time at LYIT, I was a regular gym goer and loved going to the spinning classes. I loved shopping, socialising and going out with my friends during my time at LYIT. All in all, it was an amazing three years and I studied a course I would highly recommend. I now work part-time in a pre-school in Sligo and hope to study a PGCE in the future.”

Natasha Bell from Cloghan, also studied the Early Childcare, Health and Education course at LYIT for 4 years. Her favourite modules were ‘Disability Awareness’ and ‘Human Physiology’ and she found student life fantastic at LYIT.

She said “You were always guaranteed to meet someone you knew on campus, the lecture sizes are smaller than university class sizes, which meant you could get to know all of your classmates and lecturers. The lecturers were friendly, and if you encountered any problems you could reach out to them. There was also a great range of clubs and societies to choose from.

“The four years just flew by and I met people from every corner of the country. I was so lucky to get a chance to travel to South Africa during my studies, to volunteer with Missionvale in the summer of 2014. I travelled there with my classmates and lecturers from the Nursing Department. It was truly an amazing experience and it would not have been possible without studying at LYIT.”

If you interested in studying at LYIT and want to find out more, go to www.lyit.ie, contact admissions@lyit.ie, or call Irene on 074 9186120.
