Thinning hair can be a devastating experience and unfortunately is something that both men and women can face at any age. Many women lose their confidence, don’t feel like themselves anymore and have a very low self worth because they are suffering from thinning hair.

Patrick says that 40% of women have visible hair loss by the time that they are 40 and believe it or not on average, women dealing with thinning hair are between the ages of 25 and 35!

Julie one of the Style Directors at Patrick Gildea Hairdressing Centre of Excellence is very passionate about assisting individuals who have concerns with thinning hair and Patrick has asked her to provide some information on its causes and how best to deal with it.

Julie says that the cause is often genetic and can sometimes be triggered by certain life stages. Hair cells reproduce at a faster rate than any other in our bodies and are very sensitive to changes in our health and environment.
There really is no single cause to hair thinning there are many:

Genetics

Natural, age-related hormonal changes that can trigger hair loss. This is caused by the conversion of testosterone into the toxin Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and can be inherited from either your mother or your father.

Nutrition and Diet

Julie says that what you eat can play a big role in hair thinning. A diet high in animal fats and rapid weight loss diets can result in a lack of amino acids, biotin, iron, protein and zinc — all of which are essential for healthy a hair and scalp.

Health Issues

Several health issues can cause hair thinning, including hormonal and thyroid problems as well as hormonal changes after pregnancy.

Medication

The hair follicle is really sensitive to changes in the body. Any hormone therapy (including birth control) can contribute to hair thinning, as can steroids, specific chemotherapies, and medication for blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and acne.

Julie says “the first steps to finding a solution for hair thinning is not to be embarrassed about it, go to your regular stylist and ask for their help, if it is something that they can assist with they will and at the very least they will be able to give you some styling tips on how to make the most of the hair that you have”.

Julie is a great believer in Nioxin a Hair thinning treatment designed to provide a personalized solution to hair thinning, she has been a huge fan of the range since it was introduced to the salon a few years ago. She urges anyone with hair thinning concerns to get professional advice – there just might be something available that can help you get your hair back to its best and more importantly your confidence back to where it should be.
