Irish Water has announced it is investing €22 million to upgrade Letterkenny Regional Water Supply as part of an overall investment of €73M in the water infrastructure across Donegal.
The investment will cater for the water needs of more than 90,000 people and will include planning permission granted for new water treatment plant in Goldrum
When completed, the new Letterkenny scheme will remove Letterkenny, Churchill and Rathmullan Water Supply schemes from the Environmental Protection Agency Remedial Action List.
As part of this investment, Irish Water has now been granted planning permission for the construction of a new 9,000m3/day water treatment plant at Goldrum.
In the interim, Irish Water are progressing the construction of a pipeline to supply Churchill from the existing Water Treatment Plant at Goldrum to provide an improved quality of drinking water for the community while the new Water Treatment Plant is constructed.
The move has been welcomed by county councillor James Pat McDaid.
Commenting on the announcement Sean Corrigan, Regional Information Officer for the North West at Irish Water said Irish Water is committed to investing in the upgrade of the water infrastructure in Donegal.
“As part of our investment in the county, we are delighted to announce that planning permission for the construction of a new water treatment plant at Goldrum, has now been granted. This treatment plant will have a capacity to process up to 9,000m3 of water per day and will ensure a sustainable and reliable supply of drinking water is provided to the communities in the area.”
Irish Water have commenced the procurement stage of the process to select a contractor to carry out this important construction works, construction is scheduled to begin in 2017 and to be completed by the end of 2018.
Irish Water say they will continue to keep the communities in Donegal updated on the progress of all projects taking place in the county.
