A massive €29.14 million is to be invested in Donegal’s public nursing homes.

Minister Joe McHugh TD said the announcement is one of the biggest ever made in the history of the State.

The Fine Gael politician said it is reassuring for those living in these homes, their families and communities throughout the country that the future of these public nursing homes has now been secured.

He said “Today’s announcement of €29.14 million to be invested in Donegal is one of the most comprehensive programmes of investment in public nursing home facilities in the history of the State and is extremely positive for Donegal.

“The residential care centres included in the Capital Plan 2016-2020 are: Carndonagh Community Hospital €2.6M; Buncrana Community Nursing Unit, €2.97M; Killybegs, €440,000; Falcarragh Community Hospital €2.82 M; Dungloe Community Hospital €2.61M; Ballyshannon to receive €17.4M.

“Letterkenny Community Nursing Unit is to receive €300,000 through the plan, as well as an additional €22.75M through public private partnerships (PPP) or alternative funding arrangements to be considered.”

Minister McHugh said this is a very significant investment and reflects this Government’s determination to maintain the current public nursing home bed stock.

“As a result of this investment, it is intended that all public nursing homes will be compliant with the environmental aspects of HIQA standards by 2021.

“I know that residents and their families attest to the excellence of the care received but the physical environment needs improvement.

“It is reassuring for those living in these homes, their families and communities throughout the country that the future of these public nursing homes has now been secured as a result of this investment.”
