sheep dogA FARMER blamed tourists for using his field as a toilet for sheep escaping which led to a serious road traffic accident.

Letterkenny District Court heard how a woman crashed into a wandering sheep at Burt around 8.30am on December 23, 2012.

Gardaí traced the sheep killed in the accident to farmer Stewart Buchanan, Bohullion Upper Speenoge, Burt.

The court heard that the 69-year-old farmer had accepted full responsibility for the accident and had settled insurance claims associated with it.

Inspector Michael Harrison said however that Mr Buchanan had blamed tourists for using his field as a toilet and leaving his gate open, allowing animals to escape.

The court heard Mr Buchanan had no previous convictions.

Judge Paul Kelly applied the Probation Act on the single charge of Allowing A Beast To Wander.
