A lorry driver had a miraculous escape when his truck left the road after he was temporarily blinded by oncoming headlights in Fanad.

The driver of the articulated lorry, which had just left the Marine Harvest plant at Rinmore, careered into a field but managed to stop the truck.

The driver of the O’Toole’s lorry managed to get out of his truck without as much as a scratch but was left shaken by the ordeal.

The vehicle was on its way to Dublin Airport with a delivery of salmon when the accident happened just after 7.30pm.

It is understood the driver had been distracted by full headlights coming form another vehicle as he entered a bend on the road.

Workers from Marine Harvest rushed to the scene to help but thankfully nobody was injured.

The main junction at the Fanad Head road and Rinmore remains closed as attempted are made to get the lorry back onto the road.

A large crane has been ordered from Letterkenny but it may be some time before it arrives to begin the recovery operation.

UPDATE: The road is now reopened after a recovery operation around 3am.
