GENERAL ELECTION: Independent candidate Dessie Shiels has topped our Donegal Daily poll after gaining 21% of the vote.

The popular local councillor caused somewhat of an upset yesterday and comfortable won our poll.

He gained 21% of the votes and gathered 792 votes in total.

We started our poll yesterday morning and closed voting at midnight last night – other candidates to secure seats in our poll were fellow Independent candidate Tim Jackson, Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty and Fianna Fáil duo Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher and Charlie McConalogue.

Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher came second in our poll with 15% of the vote gaining 567 votes.

Next up was sitting Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty who also got 15% of the vote and got 551 votes in total.

Charlie McConalogue got 8% of the vote and got 315 votes in total, while Tim Jackson secured the last remaining seat also gaining 8% and got 312 votes in total.

The biggest casualties of our poll were sitting TD’s Padraig Mac Lochlainn, Thomas Pringle and Joe McHugh who missed on securing a seat.

However, Mac Lochlainn and fellow Sinn Féin colleague Gary Doherty did receive over 400 votes between and both narrowly missed out on securing a seat on our poll.

While Joe McHugh received 7% of the vote gaining 250 votes in total.

We will run another General Election poll next Thursday and it’ll be interesting to see what results the electorate conjure up next week.
