CONMAN POSING AS ESB WORKER TO ‘CASE OUT’ HOUSES FOR BURGLARIES

A real ESB van.

A real ESB van.

A bogus ESB worker is calling to houses across Donegal as part of what is believed to be a scam to break into houses.

The conman is even using a yellow makeshift ESB (Electric Ireland) van and asking people to check their circuit boards.

But locals believe it is a scam to discover when occupants are out of their properties.

The conman has called to a number of different areas – the latest being in the Carrick area of Castlefin.

It is understood the conman left a property when he was asked for ID from a householder.

Gardai have warned people to ask for ID if any suspicious-looking workmen, claiming to be part of a local authority or company, call to their homes.

“Always ask for ID. A legitimate workman will have absolutely no problem getting out his ID and showing someone. In fact, many of them will be only too happy and it puts people’s minds at ease.

“If someone is suspicious then we would ask them to take details of the vehicle and let us know as soon as possible so we can investigate,” said a spokesman.
