LEAK-PRONE CLOUGHANEELY WATER SUPPLY TO GET A MAJOR OVERHAUL

A stretch of 1.5 kms of water main between Falcarragh and Gortahork will be replaced to address the problem of major water disruption in the Cloughaneely area.

There has been an unprecedented amount of bursts along the N56 between Falcarragh and Gorathork in the past 14 months which has caused massive disruptions to the supply and indeed much frustration to householders

In welcoming the news Cllr. Seamus Ó Domhnaill said the works will initially involve a detailed design being carried out for the works which will involve investigations and the drawing up of a scope of works so that the tender document can be put out for consideration and contracts signed.

“This work will involve large scale replacement which is badly needed and will ensure that the large number of bursts and stoppages which households on the Falcarragh – Gortahork water supply scheme have experienced will be dramatically reduced or ceased altogether. It is expected the total cost will be in excess of €500,000”.

This allocation according to Ó Domhnaill “ is very much welcome as it will ensure that the leaks and bursts which are currently occurring will no longer be a factor.

“People expect and deserve a proper level of service from the Water utility and I am pleased to have secured this confirmation after much discussion and many meetings. There will of course be some disruptions while the new pipes are being fitted but I believe the end result will justify the minor disruptions which will occur,” said Ó Domhnaill.

The Pipe replacement will take place on the N56 national secondary road between Falcarragh & Gortahork.

Ó Domhnaill aded that he has received assurances that any damages which occur to the roads network will be fixed to at least as good a standard as they currently are which is important as there has been much investment on this road in recent years.

“Given the fact that design works must now be carried out and the job put out to tender it is expected that it will be the latter end of 2016 or very early in 2017 when the actual construction will commence but today signifies a major positive departure given that the green light has been given and confirmation received that this project will be funded once these works will be carried out”.

The annoyance which has been caused in the local community over the last number of months has been sizeable and this announcement will go some way in abating this annoyance and insuring that the community receive a proper level of service from Irish water into the future, added Ó Domhnaill.

“The local water team have done trojan work recently in replacing pipes when bursts occurred on this water main and thanks must be afforded to the team for their work and continued dedication to ensuring the supply pipes are repaired when required. I am hopeful that the design works will be carried out imminently and I will ensure that I will continue to exert pressure upon Irish Water until this job has been completed to a satisfactory standard.”
