With the recent introduction of 2 years free preschool, all children who are 3 before September 1st, 2016 are entitled to their free preschool place.

Ms Bernie Moran of The House of Fun Montessori Preschool in Letterkenny outlined implications of the 2nd free preschool year.

Ms Moran, who is very much in favour of the second free year, said “This is fantastic for parents and children and creates a level playing field, regardless of income. Equality of access is so important so that each child has the same chance of a quality preschool education, ensuring that they are well prepared socially and academically for national school.

“I believe this will result in more parents holding off sending their child to school until they are 5. I see this as a positive outcome as your child will be better able to cope with the demands of primary school.”

There are 3 intakes, September 2016, January 2017 and April 2017, with eligibility depending on age.

Children who are 3 before September 1st 2016 can start in September 2016, those 3 before 1st January 2017 start in January 2017 and those 3 prior to April 2017 start in April 2017.

Unfortunately the 3 intakes will pose a logistical problem for many preschool providers with some filling all their places in September.

Ms Moran added “I would advise parents to check with their intended preschool and book early. This allows your chosen preschool to plan and take on additional staff if necessary. We expect demand to exceed supply this year at The House of Fun as we are currently 80% booked which is very unusual so early in the year and before we even have our enrolment day.

“The Donegal Childcare Committee are a fantastic support and source of guidance and information. Their website will guide you to childcare and preschool facilities in your area, www.donegalchildcare.com.”

The House of Fun is hosting its annual enrolment day on Sunday 28th February 2016 from 3-5pm.

Parents and children are invited to come along to view their facilities and meet their staff, who will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
