Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern believes Sinn Féin have made a massive error by not replacing Gerry Adams as their party leader.
He believes the decision to have Adams leading the party will cost Sinn Féin at least ten seats in the General Election.
Ahern believes Donegal Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty would be a more suitable leader for the party, or deputy leader Mary-Lou McDonald.
Ahern was quizzed on who he thinks should lead Sinn Féin.
In an interview with the Irish Independent Ahern said, “If you’re in Dublin it’s Mary-Lou, if you go to a lot of the countryside it’s Pearse Doherty.”
“I have to say that if Gerry had have taken early retirement I think that Sinn Féin would be far higher in seats.”
“I think that decision has blown around ten seats for Sinn Féin.”
