Donegal is in mourning following the death of Supreme Court Judge Adrian Hardiman who had strong connections with Co Donegal.

Indeed Judge Hardiman had a second home in Portnoo area and often visited the area with his wife Yvonne and family.

District Court Judge Paul Kelly held a minute’s silence in his court this morning in Letterkenny.

He described Judge Hardiman as a good friend whom he had first got to know in UCD and then as a solicitor.

He added that outside of his legal career, Judge Hardiman also a Joycean scholar and a fluent Irish speaker who often delivered his judgements in Irish.

Chief Justice Susan Denham has said she “received the news with great sadness and shock, and her immediate reaction was to be mindful of the needs of his wife and family”.

She described Justice Hardiman as “a man who had made great and courageous efforts on behalf of those who sought justice. He neither favoured nor feared any interest – and went about his work with great integrity, grit and dedication”.

Born in Coolock, Dublin and educated at Belvedere College, University College Dublin, the Honourable Mr. Justice Adrian Hardiman was called to the Bar in 1974.

He practised as a barrister for the next 26 years and was involved in many high-profile cases over the three decades.
