Enda got the thumbs down and has resigned as Taoiseach.

Enda Kenny got the thumbs down today – and has officially resigned as Taoiseach.

BREAKING NEWS: Enda Kenny has officially resigned as Taoiseach after he failed to get re-elected to the position in a Dáil vote.

Kenny will remain on as caretaker Taoiseach until a new Government is formed.

Kenny is expected to travel to Aras an Uachtarain to resign from the position he has held since 2011.

A disappointed Kenny told The Irish Independent, “It’s not the outcome that I personally would have liked to see but I respect the verdict of the people.

“The Government and I will continue to carry out our duties until a new Government is elected.”

The Government had to face unprecedented sets of difficulties. Many believed the situation was hopeless,” he said, adding: “The country is in a different place now.”

The vote for the former Taoiseach stood at: For 57, Against 94, Abstain 5.

It is expected that negotiations between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil to form the next Government will  intensify over the next few days.

Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty earlier today said that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil should stop the ‘charade’ and hurry up and form the next Government.
