Letterkenny man Iarla McGowan will be playing one of the leading parts in a major production at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin this Summer, Ireland’s National stage.

The play ‘Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme’ is written by Frank McGuinness, who also hails from Donegal.

The play, which follows the lives of a group of soldiers, as they face war and the threat of death, will be touring the UK before it arrives in Dublin in August, before finishing in London later in the year – in a co-production with Headlong Theatre Company. It will be directed by Jeremy Herrin.

The play is regularly hailed as a masterpiece and it will mark the 100th year anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. This major revival forms the centrepiece of the Abbey Theatre’s Summer/Autumn Season in 2016
