The Tír Chonaill Commemoration Committee has announced that the official unveiling of the newly commissioned statue at the Drumboe Martyrs’ commemorative site in Stranorlar will take place this evening 14th March (the anniversary of the Drumboe Martyrs) at 7.30pm.
Speaking ahead of this Monday’s unveiling, Tír Chonaill Commemoration Committee spokesperson Hugh Doherty said the new monument will be a fitting tribute to all those who gave their lives in the pursuit of Irish freedom and extended an invite to the wider public to come along for what is sure to be a memorable occasion:
He said “As chairperson of the Tír Chonaill Commemoration Committee, I am proud to announce that this latest installation in dedication of Ireland’s patriot dead will officially be unveiled this Monday 14th March at 7.30pm in Stranorlar.
“The piece is a specially commissioned statue which has been produced to represent an Irish Volunteer styled in the uniform of the era of the Drumboe Martyrs.
“The Committee wanted to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising with something which would act as a fitting tribute to all those who fought and died for Irish freedom, and we believe that we have managed to achieve this through this specially commissioned piece of work which will be erected at the commemoration site in Drumboe.
“Proceedings will begin at 7.30pm sharp on Monday next at the site of the Drumboe Martyrs and refreshments will be available in the nearby Finn Valley Centre afterwards.
“Guest speakers who will be in attendance forMonday’s offical unveiling will include South Armagh Republican Seán Hughes and Sinn Féin MP Pat Doherty. Everyone is encouraged to come along for what promises to be a very special and memorable evening.”
