Patrick and Elaine.

The good news is that with proper care and a little creativity, you can keep your colour-treated hair looking shiny and vibrant.

Patrick asked Elaine one of our Master Colour Technicians to share her experience with us on keeping coloured hair fresh and vibrant. This is what she had to say:

It’s no surprise that long lasting colour depends largely on the condition of the hair. Elaine says hair colour can make hair more porous meaning that it absorbs and releases moisture more easily which can cause loss of colour molecules every time your hair gets wet so it is important to keep as much moisture in your hair as possible by maintaining the best possible condition.

Use only high quality conditioning hair colours

Sassoon red head

If you are adding colour to your hair it is important that you choose a salon this uses high quality products that won’t have a negative impact on the moisture balance of the hair. When making an appointment don’t be afraid to ask what brand of colour is being used as you will get a good indication of quality from the brand name. (We use Wella Professional Colour)

Pick the right home hair care products

Did you know that your hair care regime should mirror your skin care regime? For example, you wouldn’t scrub your face with just anything would you? Give your hair the same consideration, use a shampoo and conditioner with colour protecting ingredients tailored to your shade.

Shampoo less frequently

To prevent washing away your beautiful vibrant colour it’s ok to get a little dirty by washing your hair every other day! This will help retain your natural oils that keeps your hair in great condition which will help with keeping your colour for longer!

Use A deep conditioning treatment

Apply a Hydrating Moisture enhancing treatment to your coloured hair once per week to keep your hair from drying out and losing its colour.

Lower water temperature

When shampooing your hair its best to use lukewarm water temperatures as hot water leeches the colour out of the hair faster.

Never skip conditioner

We know time is precious and early mornings are a rush to get out the door so to save time we can sometimes skip the conditioner. Please don’t because conditioned hair will help your colour and hair look shinier and healthier.
