Sinn Féin has nominated Pádraig Mac Lochlainn for the Seanad.
He will contest a seat on the Industrial and Commercial Panel for the party.
Speaking after his nomination, he said he was honoured to have received a Sinn Féin nomination for the Seanad.
“I narrowly lost my Dáil seat at the recent election but I am conscious that at the point of my elimination, I had the support of almost 10,000 local voters to continue my work as a TD for them. I am determined to represent those thousands of Donegal people who put their faith in me.
“If elected, I will use the Seanad as a platform to fight for the people of Donegal and to put forward Sinn Féin’s policies including protecting our most vulnerable citizens, introducing a fair tax system and investing in high quality public services with a priority of solving the crises in our health and housing services.
“I will also push for proper reform of the Seanad including the introduction of universal voting rights for Irish citizens at home and abroad”
