The slipway at the centre of the Buncrana drowning disaster has been closed.

Donegal County Council tonight (Wed) closed a barrier which had remained open since five people drowned when their car went into water at Buncrana Pier on Sunday evening.

Warning signs were also placed on the barrier.

In recent days hundreds of people have been visiting the pier to pay tribute those who drowned just after 7pm on Sunday evening.

However, the slipway remained open and many people walked down the slipway towards heavy algae on which the Audi jeep involved in the tragedy slid into the sea.

A number of cars also drove down the slipway.

Donegal Daily highlighted the issue yesterday.

However Donegal County Council confirmed it has now closed the slip.

A statement said “Donegal County Council can confirm that the slipway at Buncrana Pier has been temporarily closed to facilitate the many people who have been visiting the site to pay tribute to those who lost their life in the tragic accident at the pier on Sunday evening.”
