Right2Water Donegal has warned of what it calls “a growing anger among the public” in relation to the delay in forming a Government.

It says the reluctance of political parties and groups to form any sort of working Government in the weeks following the General Election has been met with “dismay”.

Spokesperson Owen Curran told Donegal Daily: “Since the Election we have witnessed a total charade being made of Government. TDs are sitting on their hands instead of taking responsibility. This is unacceptable.

“These Ministers were given a mandate by the electorate and yet nothing has been done. Instead they are laughing all the way to the bank at our expense. Let’s not forget that WE are paying their exorbitant salaries, surely if these politicians really believe in democracy they would be showing a lot more urgency?

“What is good for their own parties or political groupings should not be the main priority.”

Mr Curran said campaigners were discussing the possibility of another mass demonstration.

“Many of those active in the campaign in Donegal back this call,” he said.

”It has been the mobilisation of people and the refusal to pay the water charges that has ensured that this is a key issue in regards to the formation of any government , our task as campaigners now is to keep the pressure on until the objective of this campaign has been achieved…namely the abolition of water charges and a referendum to ensure water remains a public resource.”

Spokeswoman Charlie Mc Dyer added: “People are angry at the farcical way in which politicians are conducting themselves and also highly frustrated that water charges have been continually brushed aside.

“This issue is not going to go away no matter how long Fine Gael bury their heads in the sand. Fianna Fail is playing a clever game in threatening another Election – they hope to boost their numbers in the Dail by mopping up votes from people who are frustrated with Fine Gael. Be under no illusion – they don’t want to scrap water charges, merely delay them until public anger has died down.”
