Dublin star James McCarthy is set to escape a sanction for an alleged eye-gouging incident with Donegal player Martin McElhinney.

The unsavoury incident occurred during Donegal’s NFL defeat to Dublin on Saturday night at Croke Park.

TV replays appeared to show McCarthy gouge the St Michael’s clubman in the eye with his thumb.

McCarthy received a second yellow card for his part in the melee, but there were calls for a retrospective ban to be imposed after the TV replays showed what appeared to be an attempted eye-gouge by the Dublin star.

Some Donegal supporters are furious that McCarthy hasn’t been banned, especially as they feel the TV replays show conclusive evidence that he eye-gouged McElhinney.

Social media have been awash with comment on the incident over the past few days, and now many Donegal fans have reacted angrily to the news McCarthy will escape punishment.

Dublin manager Jim Gavin said, “To be suggesting there was something malicious, I don’t think that’s very fair.

“There’s lot of incidents in the game. If you slow them down to the tenth of a second playback, things won’t look as pretty as they would in real time.”
