A Donegal family have handed in an ancient historical artefact to the county museum after finding it on their land.

The Doherty family from Bridgend made the discovery of the stone hammer from the Bronze Age a number of weeks ago while working their lands.

The family kindly handed the hammer into the museum and once officially authenticated, the artefact will be put on display.

Caroline Carr of the Donegal County Museum told Donegal Daily that she was very thankful the Doherty family had brought the hammer into them.

“All finds must be handed into the relevant authorities under the National Monuments Act but we are very thankful to the Doherty family.

“It is not a rare find but it is unusual and this artefact is in very good condition.

“This find, once authenticated, can then go on display in the Donegal County Museum. It’s a lovely find for the county and its people,” she said.
