GAA: Ryan McHugh has insisted that Donegal are still as good as they were when they won the All-Ireland in 2012, and reached the decider in 2014.
Donegal are under fire after losing five consecutive games on the bounce in the National Football League.
Rory Gallagher’s side defeated Down, Mayo and Cork in their opening three NFL games, before losing to Kerry, Dublin, Roscommon and Monaghan.
Despite losing four games on-the-trot – Donegal reached the league semi-final, but were defeated comfortably by a rampant Dublin outfit.
The manner of the defeat was worrying for Donegal supporters, and some pundits have questioned are we seeing the end of a glorious era for this current Donegal squad.
RTE pundit Joe Brolly said that Donegal’s defeat to Dublin on Sunday looked like ‘the end of something.’
However, Kilcar clubman Ryan McHugh has rubbished those claims and insisted Donegal are as good as they’ve ever been.
McHugh told The Irish News, “We personally don’t think it has gone away.
“We like to think we’re still as good a team as we were in 2012 and 2014.
“We just have to try and get the confidence back in the team, get up to that level again and see what can we do.
“We know where we’re at personally and we know what we have to do and where we have to get to.
“Time is on our side, we’re still not out in the Ulster Championship for another 8 or 9 weeks.
“It was disappointing for the league to end the way it did for us, after such a good start, it was disappointing to lose to Dublin so easily in a league semi-final, but we have to take it on the chin and move on.”
