The Cathedral of Saints Eunan and Columba, Letterkenny was filled to Capacity last night to celebrate Bishop Philip Boyce’s OCD Golden Jubilee of Priesthood.

There was unprecedented number of Priests in attendance – 76!

In attendance also was Bishop of Derry Donal McKeown and former Bishop of Raphoe and Derry, Kilcar native Dr. Seamus Hegarty.

Holy Mass was offered in thanksgiving to God. Canon Austin Lavery P.P Ardara gave the Homily.

Canon Laverty also gave the Homily at the Bishops inaguaration Mass on October 1st 1995.

After Holy Mass, there was refreshments in the Loretto Convent where well wishers greeted Bishop Boyce (76) who is awaiting his resignation to be accepted which was mandatory handed in at 75.

Bishop Boyce, a native of Downings and a fluent Irish speaker, was ordained a Carmelite Priest on April 17, 1966 in Rome.

He was then a Professor of Theology and was surprisingly to him appointed Bishop of Raphoe in 1995.

In His Homily, Canon Laverty spoke about Bishop Boyce’s Humility and Holiness.

He acknowledged that Bishop Boyce took over at a very difficult period for the Church with the abuse scandals something Bishop Boyce was deeply hurt and Bishop Boyce was very dedicated to putting a strong Child Safety Guarding policy in place.
