CANCER GROUP LAUNCH APPEAL TO FIND FAMILY OF DONEGAL WOMAN

QuiltAre you related to the late Rose Ann “Rosie” Campbell we think from Meenboy, Kilcar?

It is believed Rosie left Meenboy on her own when she was just 18 many, many years ago and went to America. Maybe you were related to the late Ina Campbell RIP.

Do you have a relation from this area who became a Bishop in Florida? Why you ask?

Last year Donegal Action for Cancer Care were surprised & delighted to be recognised for our voluntary work by a lady Nancy Martens in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

This was to celebrate the 40 year friendship that she had with Jeannie Coverdale RIP & Jeannie’s connection with Donegal. It’s an amazing story of love & friendship. Jeannie made quilts & died of Breast Cancer in 2011.

Jeanne was born Jeanne Marie McDonald in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Joseph and Pauline McDonald. Joe’s family is from Northern Ireland & we know that her mother Pauline’s family came from Kilcar.

Jeannie’s husband Mike Coverdale told to us with the following “Her grandmother came over the pond and was Rose Ann “Rosie” Campbell. I visited with some of her kin at Meenboy years ago with Jeanne.

“Jeannie travelled from our small town in Iowa across the pond five times to walk in her beloved Donegal. My memories of doing that with her on two of her trips “home” are precious, as are you all to me with your service.

“I don’t know much but I do know Jeanne LOVED Donegal and that she was a gift. Thank you for helping keep her spirit around us.”

In the spring of 2010, just before she got sick, Jeanne organized a tour for some cousins to Ireland. We are trying to follow them up but it is proving difficult. DACC are now asking for your help please in trying to locate who Jeannie’s relations are in Donegal. We would love to make contact with them

In recognition of this beautiful 40 year friendship, the quilt we received in her memory and indeed the fact that DACC have been sent it, we would when we locate Jeannie’s relations hopefully get a group of women & men to come together and make a Donegal quilt which will include Jeannie’s relations names & great places in Donegal. This quilt would then be sent back to Nancy in Canada.

We would so like to do this & feel that this great story of what cancer can do which includes the poem “ What Cancer Cannot Do” deserves the effort.

If so can you please contact me Betty Holmes Donegal Action for Cancer Care. Tel:087 2905 946
