LORETO LETTERKENNY TY STUDENTS URGE NW10K RUNNERS TO STEP-4-SYRIA

TRANSITION YEAR students at one Co Donegal school have come up with a very unique and clever way of raising awareness about the fate of Syrian’s refugees.

Class Fiachra at Loreto Letterkenny want participants in this Sunday’s North West 10k to ‘donate their steps’ – and it won’t cost a cent!

The idea is that runners and walkers just sign up to donate their steps when they register for the 10K this week. It’s as simple as that.

“We are a development education class in Transition Year Loreto Convent Letterkenny,” said the girls.

“Our project is called Steps 4 Syria. Our aim is to raise awareness of the Syrian refugee crisis. We hope to educate people on this topic. More than 12 million Syrians have fled their country because they are being persecuted due to civil war. Their homes are being destroyed. They have nothing left. They are no longer safe in their own country. 20,000 Syrians have died at sea trying to reach safety,” they explained.

“This is the equivalent of the population of Letterkenny. Millions have fled to neighbouring countries and are now trying to reach Europe in search of a better life for their families.

“As a class we have joined with the North West 10k committee. We are asking you to donate your steps to our project. It takes 5,000 km for a Syrian refugee to walk from Damascus, the capital city of Syria, to Dublin. We need a minimum of 500 people to donate their distance so we can reach our target of 5,000 km. We are not asking for any money, we are simply asking you to donate your steps.”

The North West 10k in association with Donegal Daily and Brian McCormick Sports, will take place this Sunday at 2pm.

Pre-registration will take place in Letterkenny community centre at 5 p.m to 6:30 p.m from tomorrow Wednesday 27th April to Friday 29th April.

So when you are registering for the walk/run simply sign up with the Loreto girls to donate your 10k.
