Dr-William-MortonDr William Morton, the former Church of Ireland Rector in Letterkenny’s Conwal Union has been appointed Dean and Ordinary of St Patrick’s Cathedral Dublin. It is one of the highest offices within the Church of Ireland.

Prior to becoming Dean of Derry he was Rector of Conwal Union from 1991 to 1997 and for almost twenty years he has been Dean of St Columb’s Cathedral in Derry.
He will take over his new post later this year in succession to The Very Rev Victor Stacey, who retired at the end of March.

St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin is the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland and the Dean is elected from among the members of the Cathedral Chapter by the members of the Chapter.

Dean Morton studied at TCD and later completed his doctorate at the Queen’s University of Belfast in 1996. He was ordained deacon in 1988 and a priest a year later.

A highly talented organist, Dean Morton has several musical qualifications. During his ministry at St Columb’s he has overseen a major programme of renovation and he has built closer links with the Honourable The Irish Society and the London Guilds.

Dean Morton is married to Rosemary and they have three sons.

Commenting on the election of Dean Morton, Archbishop of Dublin Michael Jackson said the new Dean would “bring a wide range of gifts to his new position. Personally, I look forward to working with him in the months and years ahead.”
